The Beginning of a Family Affair
Earl Zumach grew up in Hokah, Minnesota. Although he grew up as a farm boy involved in FFA (Future Farmers of America), he didn’t have interest in becoming a farmer. After he graduated from Houston (MN) High School, Earl enrolled in an accounting program at Coleman Technical Institute, now Western Technical College. It was then that he met Owen “Rocky” Massie who, with his brother, owned several restaurants throughout Wisconsin including the Country Kitchen. Earl worked part-time for the restaurant while in school.
In 1960, Earl met his wife, Patsy, at the restaurant where they worked together. They were married three years later. Earl quit Coleman Technical to work full-time. Earl and Rocky became partners and together they opened several Country Kitchen restaurants in Wisconsin and Minnesota.
